WATCH: Safe Steps Kids’ guide on what to do during floods
By Kristelle Bechayda
With the Philippines placing in third in the list of most disaster-prone countries in last year’s World Risk Report by ReliefWeb, it’s always best to be prepared for any disasters.
Disaster preparedness is something that Prudence Foundation is placing importance on. In fact, it recently launched its new safety awareness program called Safe Steps Kids in partnership with Cartoon Network, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).
“The Philippines is one of the countries in Asia most prone to natural disasters such as floods, fires, earthquakes and typhoons. What this programme aims to achieve is to equip the most vulnerable group of our community with information on how to stay safe and react to emergencies, hence helping build a more resilient community and future generation,” explained Marc Fancy, who is the Executive Director of Prudence Foundation.
Through children’s favorite Cartoon Network characters like The Powerpuff Girls, We Bare Bears, and The Amazing World of Gumball, Safe Steps Kids delivers easy-to-understand survival tips and steps for any kind of disaster.
The program is composed of a series of 12 50-seconder public service announcements delivered by the mentioned cartoon characters to raise awareness and provide educational information. The materials are available for viewing and downloading on their website.
And with the rainy season having officially started, below are the series’ safety tips on what to do during floods, as delivered by The Powerpuff girls:
- Unplug all your electrical appliances
- Ask your parents to help you evacuate
- Monitor emergency updates
- Do NOT cross flowing water
- Get to high places
