Fun food fare for the family

By Paulyne Fermin

Nothing brings friends and family together like good food does. Wednesdays and weekends are dedicated for family days. This means taking a vote on where we want to go, what we want to do and most importantly, what we want to eat. My kids are perennially hungry and are always willing to try something different. So last month, aside from indulging in old favorites, the family tried new flavors.

Tempura the Tenya way

My daughter and I are tempura monsters! We know good ebi tempura from the minute we take our first bite. Some are soft, some too heavily battered, most use shrimps and not tiger prawns. Tenya, however, is known for its deep-fried battered seafood, meat and vegetables which are cooked using infrared heat technology, ensuring consistent tempura every time. The flavor of Tenya’s tendon (tempura rice bowl) is based on a proven combination of 100% hearthealthy canola oil and a flavored flour which gives it that light and crispy finish. Dontare sauce is liberally drizzled once the seafood is placed on top of a heaping, steaming bowl of Japanese rice.

Japanese rice bowls. Seafood, vegetables and meat tempura tendon cooked the Tenya way.

At the recently opened Tenya branch in Tiendesitas, I tried the Jo Tendon set. My daughter is a purist and devoured her Classic All Ebi Tempura Teishoku set, which is served with potato salad and hot miso. The boys enjoyed the tempura-fried maki with mango,

By Kristelle Bechayda

On her Instagram account during World Cancer Day, February 4, Miss Universe 1993 Dayanara Torres uploaded a video that said she has been diagnosed with melanoma, which is a form of skin cancer. Although the video was in Spanish, she explained her condition in English on the caption.

According to her, she has a big mole that has been growing for years, which she ignored until her fiancé Louis D’Esposito, co-president of Marvel Studios, prompted her to have it checked.

Soy #Guerrera As mothers we are always taking care of everyone around us… our kids, family, friends & often we forget to take care of ourselves. 💫 Today I have some sad news… I have been diagnosed with skin cancer "melanoma" from a big spot/mole I never paid attention to, even though it was new, it had been growing for years & had an uneven surface. 💫 My fiancé Louis had been begging me to have it checked & finally made an appointment himself… after a biopsy & a second surgery last Tuesday the results unfortunately are positive. Now we are waiting to see which treatment I will be receiving but they have already removed a big area from the back of my knee & also they have removed 2 lymph nodes at the top of my leg where it had already spread. Hoping it has not spread to any more areas or organs.

Watch: Celebrity fathers Adam Levine and John Legend star in Pampers commercial

By Kristelle Bechayda

It isn’t every day you get to see dads doing the dreaded task of changing their baby’s diapers but Pampers’ 2019 Super Bowl commercial shows otherwise. In the one-minuter advertisement, singer and actor John Legend is joined by Maroon 5 frontman and fellow dad Adam Levine in another episode of Stinky Booty Duty.

The video starts with Legend about to change the diaper of his 8-month-old son Miles while singing the “Stinky Booty” song that was released in his previous Pampers’ commercial. “Oooh,” he exclaims upon unfastening his son’s diaper. “I’m gonna need some backup on this one.”

Then, his two-year-old daughter Luna enters the frame to give him some wipes. Deeming them insufficient, he turns to a group of dads with baby carriers to help him finish singing the song, which they do in such beautiful harmony. Just as the song is drawing to an end, Levine finishes the last line while fastening the diaper of his own daughter, Gio Grace.

The video ends with Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen entering their home and asking, “Must we do this every time?” upon seeing the scenario that is taking place.

This new commercial launches Pampers’ “Love the Change” campaign to celebrate the roles dads play in their children’s lives.

The definition of family is redefined in upcoming movie “Instant Family”

Going to the cinemas is probably one of our favorite recreational activities as Filipinos, even more so when we are with our families. There are just some feel-good movies that not only tug at everyone’s emotions but also leave important life lessons too. If you’re on the lookout for that kind of film, you shouldn’t miss Paramount Pictures’ new heartwarming comedy “Instant Family.”

Starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne, it tells the story of a couple named Pete and Ellie who wants to start a family through foster care adoption. While they intend to take in one child at first, they end up adopting three siblings instead, including a rebellious 15-year-old girl named Lizzy who is portrayed by Isabela Moner. Having to adjust from not having kids to fostering three, the film depicts their hilarious attempt at being instant parents in the hopes of becoming a family.

“Instant Family” is inspired from the actual experience of writer/director Sean Anders and sends out an important message that family can come from anywhere.

“Knowing Sean brought children into his home and created his own family and has encouraged other people to do the same is a very special thing. Hopefully it will encourage and inspire people to look into children in the foster care system and create a home for them.” actor Mark Wahlberg said.

Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne play the role of the couple who became instant parents after agreeing to foster three siblings.

Three ways to make marriage stronger

By Dennis and Thammie Sy

Q: My husband and I are very busy people. This is not counting our daily household activities, raising kids, paying the bills, and more! How can we make time for each other?

A: Dennis: This is a typical scenario among married couples and families today. We live in a fast-paced world. We celebrate speed, and we make goals and self-imposed deadlines to make ourselves productive and fruitful. With this change, we also pass on the pressure to our kids. The endless errands, the school and extracurricular activities, meetings, and deadlines make us wonder…is there more to life than this?

In the past two years, Thammie and I have consciously slowed down a bit to enjoy moments as a couple and as a family. It was not an easy thing to do. In fact, we had some sort of speed withdrawal because of how fast-paced and crazy our lives were when we said yes to almost every opportunity that came our way. It didn’t help that both of us are achievers and grew up in a family where achievement is a goal.

In light of this realization, we have decided to do things differently in the past few years. We are still a work in progress, but we have seen drastic improvements in our lives, our stress level, and our relationships. Here are three guiding principles that have helped us:

1. Walk slowly.

During the Christmas break,
